About Agartala Airport

The third biggest airport in Northeast India, the Agartala Airport, officially known as Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport (IATA: IXA), is situated at a distance of 12 Km from the city centre. It is situated on the banks of the Kushiyara river. The airport services the state of Tripura and was established back in 1942 by the then ruler Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur. The airport has a single terminal that houses 250 passengers at any given moment ñ both for arrivals and departures. At the terminal, there are 14 check-in counters, four security checkpoints, one immigration counter as well as an area for cargo pick-ups. This ensures that passengers arrive on time, without having to worry about any delays or missing flights! Presently, there are just over one million international passenger arrivals that pass through the single terminal building each year, as well as 300 weekly flights that connect Agartala with several international destinations, including New Delhi.

About Agartala

Ruler Krishna Chandra Manikya Bahadur belonged to the Manikya Dynasty and presided over Agartala in the 19th century. He decided to shift his capital to Agartala from Swadhin Tripura. However, the beautiful city had to endure many invasions by the colonial rulers, and King Bahadur had to frequently shift the capital in 1849 from Old Haveli (former Agartala) to New Haveli (present Agartala). In the 20th century, the Agartala Municipality re-constructed the city and planned new roads, sewage systems, beautiful buildings, and bustling markets. The royal city of Agartala, the capital of Tripura, is a fine example of ancient Indian architecture and hospitality. It offers spectacular lakes, ornate palaces, and several beautiful temples to its visitors. Since pristine forests and roaring waterfalls surround Agartala, it makes for a stunningly beautiful holiday destination. The state is also known for its rich flora and fauna intertwined within Tripuraís history and culture. Though many people speak Bengali, the Kokborok language is their official language. Because of its northeastern location near the mountainous sides of India, Agartala has a moderate climate throughout the year. Although, temperatures start getting hot during July and August, so itís ideal to visit the city from October to March.
