About Coimbatore

Coimbatore is Tamil Naduís third-largest city and a hub for automobile, textile, industrial equipment and other major industries. Coimbatore has more than 25,000 industrial units of different scales. The city, on the banks of the river Noyyal, has a rich historical legacy that dates back to the 2nd century. Earlier known as Kongunadu, the Coimbatore region was ruled by the Chalukyas, the Cholas, the Rashtrakutas, Pandyas, Hoysalas, etc. Kongunadu was renamed Coimbatore after the British colonial rulers occupied the region. However, in Tamil, Coimbatore is still referred to as Kovai.Taking advantage of the rich black soil around Coimbatore, the British rulers expanded cotton plantations in the region, which paved the way for the textile industry. The first textile mill was established in 1888. However, the industry experienced a boom after hydroelectricity was generated from the Pykara Falls in the 1930s. Due to the high density of textile manufacturing mills in Coimbatore, it also got the title ìManchester of South Indiaî.Due to its location in the rain-shadow region of the Western Ghats, Coimbatore enjoys a pleasant climate all-year round. The 25 km-wide Palakkad gap constantly provides a gush of cool breeze to Coimbatore, enhancing the quality of its climate.Besides being an industrial hub, Coimbatore is also famous for tourism as it is close to several serene holiday destinations, including Ooty. Coimbatore is well-connected with the rest of India through roads, railways and airways.
