About Tezpur Airport

The Shillong Airport is a domestic airport (IATA: SHL) near Umroi, Meghalaya, located about 30 km from the city of Shillong. The airport administration is handled by the Airports Authority of India (AAI) and the Indian Air Force. The airport was constructed in the middle of the 1960s and was not open to passengers till the mid-1970s. To expand the airport, 224.16 acres of land were bought in 2009. The project commenced in June 2009 and was completed in May 2010. In June of 2011, a new terminal building, with a construction cost of Rs. 30 crores, was opened to the public. In 2015, land was donated for the potential expansion of the airport. In 2017, AAI completed the following projects: installation of an instrument landing system (ILS) and two refuelling facilities, extension of the runway, and elimination of flight-path obstructions. To handle narrow-body planes such as the Boeing 737 and the Airbus A320, the existing runway, which is of 6,000 ft in length, will be expanded to about 8,000 ft. A total of 8,000 crores was spent on the project, and the expansion was said to have been quite challenging.

The Agartala Airport, known as the Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport (IATA: AXA), is situated about 12 km to the northeast of the city. It is the third busiest airport in Northeast India.
