About Kozhikode

Also known as Calicut, Kozhikode is a city in Kerala. Situated on the Malabar Coast, it has been recognised as the second finest city in India to live in and is located 666 km from Chennai. The city has a history of Arab traders performing transactions in the area that dates back to the 7th century. In 1498, the Portuguese explorer Vasco da Gama set anchor at Kozhikode, which opened up a commercial route between Europe and the Malabar. During the years 1511 and 1525, before the fall of Calicut, the Portuguese established a factory and a fort in the city of Kozhikode. The first to arrive were the English in 1615, who established a trade station there in 1665. Next came the French in 1698 followed by the Dutch (1752). As part of their takeover of the Malabar Coast in 1765, Mysore successfully seized Kozhikode's control. Today, the city exports crops such as pepper, ginger, coffee, and tea, in addition to items made from coconut. Kozhikode is home to various natural and artificial attractions, including beaches, temples, churches, sanctuaries, hillocks, museums, and more. The area around Kozhikode is often wet and swampy. Because of this, people all refer to the city as Chullikkad, which translates to "shrubby forest."
