Madurai International Airport (IATA: IXM, ICAO: VOMD) is a customs airport serving Madurai and its neighbouring cities and international destinations like Columbo, SIngapore and Dubai. It is located 12 km away from Madurai city. It was built in 1957. It has two adjoining terminals, old and new. The old terminal is used for cargo services, while the new terminal is used for domestic and international flights. The newly integrated terminal is spread over an area of 17,600 sq. m. The airport has several facilities like an executive lounge, restaurants, trolleys, wheelchairs, pharmacy, money exchange and Wi-Fi.

Madurai, previously Madura, is an important city in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. It is located around 48 km southeast of Dindigul, on the Vaigai River. Madurai is the state's third most populated city as well as the oldest. Madurai is the seat of the Tamil language where Tamil Sangam (literary association) used to take place in 350 BC. Madurai was the capital city of the Pandyas (4thñ11th century CE) and was later captured by the Cholas, Delhi Sultanate, and Vijayanagar Empire. Madurai became the epicentre of Indian freedom struggle in the 1940s, and it has remained a significant political centre ever since. Madurai has several large-scale industries such as cotton spinning & weaving, transportation equipment, tobacco, and sugar manufacturing units. With extensive road and rail networks, Madurai is an important connecting point between the northern and southern parts of the state. Just south of the town lies an airport that serves international and domestic passengers and freight.

Lengpui Airport is a domestic airport situated 32 km away from Aizawl, Mizoram. It serves Kolkata, Guwahati, and Imphal. Its table-top runway is impressive with many highland rivers running underneath. It has one terminal and can handle 250 passengers.
