Aizawl to Silchar Flights

Silchar Airport is located around 29 km away from Silchar in Kumbhirgram. It was built by the British in 1944 as the RAF base in Kumbhirgram and was transferred to the Royal Indian Air Force (RIAF). The Indian Air Force owns the airport, which operates as a civil enclave managed by the Airports Authority of India. The airport lies on the foothills of the Barail range and is Northeast India's fourth-busiest Airport. According to the Airports Authority of India's 2018-19 data, Silchar Airport ranks 47th busiest airport in India regarding passenger traffic. Silchar Airport is situated at an elevation of 338 feet above sea level. It is spread across 36 acres and has only one domestic terminal. There are four check-in counters and a boarding gate at the airport, with a capacity to handle around three hundred passengers at a time. Amenities at the airport include a handicrafts shop, a restaurant, chocolate shops, ATMs and free Wi-Fi. Silchar Airport has Precision Approach Path Indicator on runways on both sides, enabling pilots to keep the right course during landings and takeoffs. It also has an Instrument Landing System to provide approach direction when the aircraft tunes to the ILS frequency.

Silchar is situated in the Cachar district of Assam, around 343 km southeast of Guwahati. In 1832, Captain Thomas Fisher shifted the headquarters of Cachar to Silchar. Indira Gandhi, then Prime Minister of India, named it the 'Island of Peace.' Silchar is situated in the Janiganj-Sadarghat area near the banks of the Barak River. Silchar is known for producing rice, tea, and other agro products. The word Silchar is derived from two Bengali words, 'Shil' and 'Char', which mean 'rock' and 'island'. It is also called 'Shiler Chor'. Once ruled by the Kachari dynasty, Silchar is known for its rich culture. In the mid-19th century, the Narsing Akhara shrine was built in Silchar. The world's first polo club was formed in Silchar, and the first competitive polo match was played here.

Aizawl Airport, also known as Lengpui Airport, is a domestic airport. It operates flights to many Indian cities like New Delhi, Guwahati, Kolkata and Shillong. Situated around 32 km from Aizawl, Aizawl Airport is the first airport in India built by the state government. Construction of Aizawl Airport was completed in a record span of 2 years and two months, in February 1998. The airport has the capacity to handle 300 passengers. Air Deccan, later known as Kingfisher Red, served Lengpui Airport. However, it stopped operating in April 2012. Air India, IndiGo and Alliance Air operate flights to and from Aizawl Airport. It is one of the three airports in India with a table-top runway with a Cat-I instrument landing system to promote the safe landing of planes in low visibility conditions.

Aizawl is the capital of Mizoram and is situated in its north-central region. The rivers Dhaleshwari, Sonai and Tuivawl and their tributaries flow across the region. Aizawl became a part of the Assam state in 1950. However, the tribals of the Mizo Hills demanded autonomy. In 1972, the Union Territory of Mizoram was carved from Assam, with Aizawl as the administrative centre. Eventually, in 1987, Mizoram was given the status of a state, and Aizawl became its capital. Aizawl is the state's most populous city, surrounded by bamboo and timber forests. It has thin soil coverage except for the river valleys where beans, corn, rice, cotton, tobacco, oilseeds, pumpkins and peanuts are grown. Hunting, fishing and animal husbandry are commonly practised by the people of Aizawl, along with the manufacturing of hand-loomed textiles, furniture and aluminium utensils. Aizawl is also known for its primary cottage industries, which include basket-making, hand-weaving, and carpentry.
