About Amritsar

Amritsar is a holy city for Sikhs and people belonging to other religions. Its ancient name was Ramdaspur, and it is also known as Ambarsar. The name Amritsar is derived from Lake Amrit or a pool of nectar surrounding the Golden Temple or Harmandir Sahib. The Golden temple is the holiest for Sikhs all over the world, and hence Amritsar symbolises the cradle of Sikhism. Guru Ramdas believed that Lake Amritís waters had healing powers. Amritsar has plenty of tourist sites of historical significance. It is also famous for its Amritsari cuisine. Kulchas and Tikkas are among the most popular foods here. Vegetarians can sample Sarson Da Saag and Makki ki roti, Chole-puri and piping hot jalebis. Non-vegetarians are spoilt for choice with Amritsari Macchi, Tandoori chicken, Chicken Tikka, Keema Kulcha, Shami Kebab, Mutton Tikka and Mutton Chaap. Amritsari hospitality is on full display at the communal kitchen at the Golden temple, which serves Guru ka langar and kara Prasad. Amritsar is renowned not only as a religious centre but also known as a trade and commercial centre. Many artefacts and handicrafts are available here. Shawls, carpets, dress materials and sarees with phulkari work, imitation jewellery, juttis, woollen garments and pashmina shawls are widely available.
