About Amritsar

Amritsar is the largest city in the north-western state of Punjab. Situated just 25 km from Indiaís border with Pakistan, it is Punjabís most important city as it is home to the Harmandir Sahib, or Golden Temple, the seat of the Sikh religion. The city was founded in 1577 CE by the fourth Sikh Guru, Ram Das, on land granted by Mughal Emperor Akbar. The Guru ordered the excavation of a sacred pool, called the Amrit Sarovar, or ëPool of Nectarí, and constructed the Harmandir Sahib in the midst of this holy tank. Itís also where the city of ëAmritsarí gets its name. The Golden Temple ó thus called as its dome was covered in gold foil during the reign of Sikh Maharaja Ranjit Singh ó is a place of pilgrimage for Sikhs from across the world. It is also one of the most popular tourist attractions in Amritsar. Amritsar is an atmospheric city. There are many cultural markers as well as historic monuments here. Among the top tourist attractions in Amritsar is the Jallianwala Bagh, where the colonial British massacred hundreds of Indians in 1919. Tourists come here to honour the memory of these martyrs.
