About Varanasi Airport

Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport is an international airport in Babatpur, Uttar Pradesh, around 26 Km northwest of Varanasi. It was formally renamed after Lal Bahadur Shastri, Indiaís second Prime Minister, in October 2005. It was formerly known as Varanasi Airport. It is Indiaís 18th busiest airport in terms of passenger traffic and is also Uttar Pradeshís second busiest airport. The Airports Council International has named the airport the best in Asia-Pacific for 2020 (in the category of 2 to 5 million passengers per year). The airport has a single asphalt runway that is 9,006 feet long, with two exits to the main apron and turnarounds on both ends. A third exit connects to an isolated apron that can be utilised in an emergency. With a floor size of 3,900 square metres, an integrated terminal handles both domestic and international aircraft (42,000 square feet). The terminal has 16 CUTE (common-user terminal equipment) check-in desks, four immigration counters that also serve as emigration counters, and two baggage-claim belts. Apart from an upper-level waiting area for the aerobridge gates, the terminal has a ground-level gate for walking or using the shuttle bus to other airplanes on the apron. Five narrow-body aircraft can be parked on the apron at the same time.

About Varanasi

Varanasi, located on the Ganges River in northern India, is a Hindu pilgrimage centre. Varanasi was renamed after 1947, although the city is still known as Banaras or Benares, and has also been known as Kashi from ancient times. Varanasi is located on the left side of the river in the middle-Ganges valley in the southeastern region of Uttar Pradesh. It lies 692 Km southeast of New Delhi, 320 Km south of Lucknow, the state capital, and 121 Km east of Prayagraj, another Hindu pilgrimage place. Silk weaving, carpets and crafts, tourism, and the Banaras Locomotive Works and Bharat Heavy Electricals all employ a major portion of the local people. Varanasi is a cultural centre in Northern India that has long been linked to the Ganges River. Hindus believe that dying here and being cremated along the banks of the Ganges River breaks the cycle of rebirth and makes salvation possible. The city is famous for its ghats, which are stairs that go down the steep river bank to the water, where pilgrims perform rites. The Dashashwamedh Ghat, the Panchganga Ghat, the Manikarnika Ghat, and the Harishchandra Ghat are all noteworthy, with the last two serving as Hindu cremation sites. Varanasi is situated along the left crescent-shaped bank of the Ganges, averaging between 15 metres (50 feet) and 21 metres (70 feet) above the river. The city is the administrative centre of the Varanasi district.
