Rao Jodha, a Rajput, founded the city in 1459. In 1679, the Mughal dynasty Aurangzeb seized the Marwar region, ordering its inhabitants to convert to Islam. Jodhpur was granted British supremacy in 1818 and became a part of Rajasthan in 1949. Jodhpur has an important regional road and rail junction and is a trading centre for cattle, crops, salt, wool and hides. Tourism is a significant contributor to the city's economy. English and Hindi are the city's official languages, whereas Marwari, Rajasthani and Sindhi are native.
