About Ujjain

It is also one of the holy pilgrimage sites of Sapta Puri and holds the Kumbh Mela every 12 years. The ancient city is located on the banks of the river Shipra. It was the capital of Avanti, one of the sixteen Mahajanapadas. It is located on the Malwa plateau. It retained its status as a significant centre of power until British rule. Post-independence, it joined the state of Madhya Bharat, which was later merged into Madhya Pradesh in 1956.The region enjoys a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and cool to cold winters. It has a population of around half a million and has a municipal corporation and urban development authorities. The region is surrounded by three industrial economic zones ñ Dewas Road, Maxi Road and Tajpur.Ujjain has a good network of roadways and railways. There are presently no airports here.
