The airport is named after Maharani Ahilya Bai Holkar, the famous ruler of the Holkar Dynasty.Most of the flights from this airport are conducted by IndiGo. Other carriers include Air India and Vistara. The regional carrier, FlyBig, also has flights operating from Indore Airport. The airport directly connects with some major cities, including Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Ahmedabad, Allahabad, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Lucknow, and Raipur, among others.

Ujjain is the fifth most populous city in the state of Madhya Pradesh. It is the administrative centre of the Ujjain district. It is also one of the holy pilgrimage sites of Sapta Puri and holds the Kumbh Mela every 12 years.The ancient city is located on the banks of the river Shipra. However, their successors moved the capital to Gwalior, thus, shifting the attention of the British to Indore and Ratlam. Post-independence, it joined the state of Madhya Bharat, which was later merged into Madhya Pradesh in 1956.The region enjoys a humid subtropical climate with hot summers and cool to cold winters. It has a population of around half a million and has a municipal corporation and urban development authorities. The airport handled close to 130 thousand people each year before the pandemic hit. Several domestic airlines such as IndiGo, Air India, and AllianceAir operate flights to and from Bhopal Airport. It is directly connected to other major cities such as Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Jabalpur, Jaipur, and Lucknow.The new terminal was inaugurated in 2011, with customs, x-ray scanners and three aerobridges. A fourth aerobridge is currently under construction. A temporary cargo hub has been operational since 2019. The airport has several retail outlets, eateries and refreshment stalls.

It later came under the Begum rule, a unique historical phase where four Begums ruled the region. Bhopal had become a princely state during the British reign, and the last Nizam wished to form an independent state, refusing to join the Indian union. After several agitations, it was taken over by the government of India in 1949.The region lies on the Malwa plateau on the northern side of the Vindhya range. It has two prominent lakes ñ the upper and the lower lakes, alongside several other man-made lakes.The climate here is humid subtropical, with hot summers, wet monsoons and cool winters. The city has a solid economic base with several prominent heavy industries, pharmaceutical companies, and tech giants. The city is well-connected by roadways, railways, and airways. The Bhoj metro railway is currently under construction.
