The flight services were interrupted many times in the past due to low occupancy, once during 1999-2006 and once during 2012-17. However, in 2017, SpiceJet again commenced its passenger services. It has only one terminal that can handle approximately up to 100 passengers. At present, there are no flights to Bhubaneswar from Kandla or vice versa. However, there is a direct flight to Mumbai and many connecting flights via Mumbai.

In recent years, it has also emerged as an educational and industrial hub.
