About Bhuj

Bhuj is a city in the western state of Gujarat and the capital of the Kutch region of the state. It lies in the lowlands, between the Rann (marsh) and the Gulf of Kutch. Bhuj is known for its handicrafts, annual Rann Utsav, and the white desert or salt desert. The region is inhabited by various tribal communities, whose embroidery and textile traditions have made Bhuj famous in India and overseas. These include intricate bead work, metal and silver jewellery, bandhni, and Patola sarees, dhurries and bed covers and a wide variety of pottery. Legend has it that the city takes its name from the Bhujiyo Dungar, a hill that overlooks the city. The Kutch region was ruled by the Samma Rajputs of Sindh from the 8th to 16th centuries. Later, it was taken over by the Jadeja Rajputs. In the late 16th century, the Mughals captured the city, followed by the Rajput ruler Lakhpati I in 1741 CE. These two dynasties led to an architectural awakening in Bhuj and the city's most widely known structures were built then. Bhuj is famous for its local cuisine, from its creamy chana dal pakwan, to the spicy dabeli, and Gujarati Thali.
