About Varanasi

Located on the banks of the Ganga river in the North Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, Varanasi is one of the oldest surviving cities in the world. Varanasi, previously known as Benares or Kashi, is the seat of Vedic philosophy and finds mention in some of India's oldest Hindu writings, including the Vedas and Mahabharata. One of the sacred cities for Hindus, the name Varanasi comes from the names of the two river tributaries of Ganga ó Varuna and Assi. Varanasi's old and rich cultural heritage has always been patronised by art, literature, and music enthusiasts. It also used to be an important centre for trade and commerce. Varanasi's weavers are famous worldwide for carpet weaving and gold and silver threadwork on silk and brocade. Banarasi sarees, with their rich embroidery, have heirloom value. Literary luminaries such as Kabir, Ravidas, Tulsidas, and Premchand are from Varanasi. The city's music lineage, too, runs deep with connections to music legends like Ustad Bismillah Khan and Ravi Shankar. The Benares Gharana of Hindustani classical music took shape here. Varanasi chaats and jalebis are a gastronomical delight. The city's delectable food, such as kachori sabzi, dahi chutney, golgappe, and lassi, is influenced by the people from Rajasthan, Bihar, and West Bengal, who have settled here and added their touch to the local cuisine. Varanasi experiences a mostly cloudy and oppressive wet season and a mostly clear dry season with a hot atmosphere all year round. The best time to visit Varanasi is from mid-March to early May and early October to early November.
