Leh's Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airfield (IATA code: IXL) is noteworthy for being one of the highest airports in the world at 3,256 m above sea level. Leh is a city in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. This former capital of the Himalayan region of Ladakh is situated 3524 m above sea level. Known as Maryul and Kha- chumpa in the past, the first Immigrants here appear to have been the Brokpas from Dadarstan who inhabited the lower reaches of the Indus Valley. Skitde Nemagon, the ruler of Tibet, invaded Ladakh in the 10th century AD and established a strong kingdom near Leh. In 1979, Ladakh was divided into two districts, Leh and Kargil. For centuries, Leh was a stopover or terminus on trade routes along the Indus Valley between Tibet and Kashmir and between India and China. Today, it remains one of the highest permanently inhabited towns in the world.
