About Gaya

Gaya, a historical city in Bihar, is also the administrative headquarters of the Magadh region. It was a part of the Magadh Empire. Patna, the capital of Bihar, is a 100 km drive from Gaya. Situated on the banks of the Falgu River, Gaya is one of the holiest places for Hindus, Buddhists and Jains alike. This lovely and scenic location is surrounded by hills, namely Mangala-Gauri, Shringa-Sthan, Ram-Shila, and Brahmayoni, on three sides. Gaya is also a historically and culturally significant site. The city has also witnessed the glorious reigns of several ancient empires like Sisunaga, Nanda, Magadh, Pala and Mauryan Empire until it was captured by the Mughal Sultanate and then the British. There is a folk legend behind its name Gaya, according to which it is believed that it is named after Gayasur, a mythical asura or demon. According to local beliefs, Lord Vishnu blessed Gayasur after he performed penance in the shape of the rocky hills that today make up the scenery of Gaya. Thus the city came to be known as Gaya. The city of Gaya is connected to other major cities in Bihar and India by railways, airways and roadways. Autorickshaws and buses are the preferred form of transportation for intercity travel. Gaya is mostly inhabited by adherents of Jainism, Hinduism and Buddhism. It is also considered by Hindus to be the gateway to enlightenment. There are several Jain temples in Gaya, making it a significant pilgrimage place for Jains.
