About Jorhat

Jorhat is a prominent city in the north-east of Assam and it is also called the ëTea Capital of Indiaí. The city is situated on the banks of a tributary of the Brahmaputra River, in the middle of a fertile agricultural region, of which it is the commercial nerve centre. Jorhat means joint ëhaatsí or bazaars, a reference to the Macharhat and Chowkihat markets nearby, on the banks of the Bhogdoi River, a tributary of the Brahmaputra. Jorhat was the last capital of the mighty Ahom kingdom, which ruled Assam for almost 600 years. It owes its growth and development to the Ahom kings, who shifted their capital from Sibsagar to Jorhat in the late 18th century. In the early 20th century, Jorhat fell to the Burmese, before passing to the colonial British less than a decade later. It was the British who rebuilt the town and developed it as a commercial centre focused on tea. They established tea gardens all across the region and opened the famous Tocklai Tea Research Institute, whose primary purpose is to research tea cultivation and develop new varieties of the brew. Jorhat is also famous for the manufacture of traditional Assamese jewellery. It is hand-made and inspired by the flora and fauna of the region as well as objects such as musical instruments and items used in daily life. The jewellery is made of silver, which is covered by a light layer of gold. The city is also associated with freedom fighters such as Maniram Dewan, Gomdadhar Kanwar, and Piyali Barua, who were martyred for the cause of Indiaís independence from the British. Given its rich history and vibrant culture, Jorhat is a touristís haven, with plenty to immerse yourself in.
