About Gwalior

Gwalior is a city in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. The name ëGwaliorí roughly translates to ëcowherdís hillí. According to legend, the city was established in the 8th century by a local chieftain, Suraj Sen, in honour of hermit-saint Gwalipa, who had helped cure his leprosy, a deadly disease at that time. However, an inscription in the walled fortress of Gwalior dates back to 525 CE and archaeological evidence indicates this region was occupied as far back as the Paleolithic Age. Gwalior has been ruled by several dynasties and rulers such as the Nagvans, Rajputs, Mughals, Tomars, Marathas and the Scindias. A fusion of Braj and Bundeli cultures can be found in the city. Also known as the City of Music, Gwalior was visited by acclaimed musicians like Tansen. Today, the city houses one of the oldest and most popular Gharanas of Hindustani classical music. Festivals like the Tansen Samaroh add to the cultural significance of the region. Today, Gwalior is a cultural, commercial, industrial and political centre with its major industries being the manufacture of footwear, pottery, biscuits, textiles, carpets, glass, cotton, sugar and stone carving.
