In 2007, the Airport Authority of India began an airport modernisation plan for Jolly Grant Airport. The runway was extended from 3,500 feet to 7,000 feet and broadened from 23 to 45 metres to make the landing easier for narrow-body jets like the Airbus 320 and the Boeing 737. A new terminal building was constructed along with a night landing system and an ATC tower. Commercial operations resumed at the airport in 2008 after the completion of the runaway extensions, and a new terminal was unveiled in 2009.This newly constructed airport is 35 Km from Haridwar and 20 Km from Rishikesh, making the region accessible to travellers. It is nearly a 1-hour drive from Jolly Grant Airport to the city centre of Dehradun. It is one of the busiest airports in India, with around 1.2 million passengers each year.
