The airport is located in Ujalaiwadi, 9 km southeast of Kolhapur. Initially, Kolhapur witnessed air services in May 1940, when a private airline started serving the princely state of Kolhapur. The present-day Kolhapur Airport began operations in 1987. Now it is a domestic airport serving direct flights from Tirupati, Ahmedabad, and Hyderabad while having connecting flights from other major metro cities. The airportís terminal has a handling capacity of 300 travellers per hour. It has 10 check-in counters, 24x7 baggage and free trolley facilities, a lounge, shops, eateries, and cafes.

Kolhapur is located on the banks of River Panchganga in the southern part of Maharashtra. The city got its name from a demon called Kolhasur. As per legend, Kolhasur committed numerous crimes for 100 years after asking Ambadevi to leave town as a boon. In the dying wish, the devil asked the town to be named after him, which Devi Mahalaxmi accepted. So the name Kolhapur came into being. Kolhapur is also known as 'Dakshin Kashi' (Kashi of the South) because of the numerous ancient religious temples in the city. Dehradun Airport is located 25 km east of the city, nestled in the foothills of the Himalayas.
