About Delhi

New Delhi is the national capital of India. It is located in the Delhi national capital territory, close to and just south of Delhi city (Old Delhi), on the west bank of the Yamuna River in the north-central region of the nation. King George V of Britain proclaimed in December 1911 ordering the transfer of British India's capital from Calcutta (now Kolkata) to Delhi. The construction started in 1912, and the new capital was formally inaugurated in 1931. The vast, tree-lined avenues in New Delhi, with their straight and diagonal patterns, extensive greenery, and expansive views, contrast strongly with the congested, meandering streets that are typical of Old Delhi. The city is home to numerous historical sites, including museums, monuments, minarets, and tombs. Among Delhi's top sights are Qutub Minar, Lal Qila, Humayun's Tomb, and Jantar Mantar. These monuments are not simply tourist attractions but also significant archaeological sites. New Delhi is a cosmopolitan city that has embraced the whole of India in it. Since people from across the country reside here, the city has become home to a multi-linguistic, pluralistic society. Art and paintings have always enjoyed great prestige since the Mughal days. Nationally significant days like Independence Day and Republic Day are celebrated in grandeur in the capital city.
