About Visakhapatnam

Visakhapatnam, also known as Vizag, is a coastal port city located in Andhra Pradesh, off the coast of the Bay of Bengal. Historically, one can trace the origins of Visakhapatnam to when it was a part of the ancient Kalinga kingdom. Owing to its location off the coast of the Bay of Bengal, the city transformed into a hub for trade with Middle East nations and Rome.Local legend suggests Visakhapatnam derived its name from a king who was on his way to Varanasi as a pilgrim. As he rested in the town, the king was so enchanted by the beauty of the place that he built a shrine named ëVishakhaí. It was built to the south of what is known today as Lawson's Bay. Although the shrine is now believed to have been washed away by the sea, the city derived its name from the same, after adding 'patnam', which means city. Thus, the name Visakhapatnam translates into the 'city of Vishakha'.Visakhapatnam was ruled by several rulers, such as the Gajapatis of Odisha, the Nawabs of Golconda, and the Reddys of Kondaveedu, and the French took control of the province at the beginning of the 19th century. During the French occupation, the port of Visakhapatnam was used by French, Dutch and other European merchants to trade valuable items such as muslin and ivory.Today, Visakhapatnam, along with its scenic beaches and historical sites, has evolved into a town famous for housing one of India's deepest and major seaports and the Eastern Naval Command of the Indian Navy.
