About Bhopal

Bhopal is the capital city of Madhya Pradesh, a state in central India. The city is located at a height of 500m, north of the Vindhyachal, in the plains of the Malwa Plateau. Bhopal is often known as the ìCity of Lakesî because of its natural and artificial lakes. The cityís name is also derived from the words ìBhoj Tal,î which refers to Bhopalís Upper Lake, made by Raja Bhoj. Indeed, the Upper Lake (Bada Talab) and the Lower Lake (Chota Talab) are vital for supplying Bhopalís drinking water. Bhopal was established in the 11th century by Raja Bhoj, of the Paramara dynasty. In the 17th century, the city became a part of the Gond kingdom, and eventually, the city fell to Mughal rule. During the Mughal period, Bhopal was expanded even further by Dost Khan. After the British captured India, Bhopal became a princely state in 1818. Between 1819 and 1926, Bhopal was ruled by four consecutive queens called the Begums: Qudsia Begum, Sikandar Begum, Shah Jehan, and Kaikhusrau Jehan. The Begum rule was broken when Kaikhusrau Jehan abdicated her throne to her son, Hamidullah Khan, who ruled the state until 1947. Hamidullah Khan did not want Bhopal to become a part of India until the people revolted against him. Modern-day Bhopal is a national giant in heavy industries, automobiles, chemicals, electrical goods, textiles, aerospace engineering, etc. The city is home to Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL), ISROís master control facility, as well as several institutes of national importance such as AIIMS, IISER, SPA, MANIT, IIFM, NID, RSCB, and IIIT. Indeed, Bhopal is the educational, manufacturing, and scientific capital of central India.
