Mahayogi Gorakhnath Airport, also known as Gorakhpur Airport (Code: GOP), is situated approximately 5km from the city of Gorakhpur. The Gorakhpur Airport is used as a joint-use airport for both military and civil aviation. The civil terminal of the airport was inaugurated in June 2017 by the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh. At present, the Gorakhpur Airport has one runway and the existing civil terminal can handle only 200 passengers at peak hours. The airport witnessed more than 600,000 passengers during the year 2019. However, in view of the growing traffic at the airport and considering the limited options available due to restrictions enforced by the Airports Authority of India, a greenfield airport has been proposed on the Gorakhpur-Varanasi National Highway, covering an area of 300 acres.
