About Gorakhpur

Located in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Gorakhpur is one of India's most populous cities. The city is situated approximately 70 miles (110 km) east of Faizabad and about 40 miles (65 km) south of the Nepalese border along the Rapti River, a branch of the Ghaghara River. Gorakhpur was founded in the early 1400s and was named after a revered Hindu spiritual figure. It was a major Muslim garrison town and the divisional capital under the Mughal emperor Akbar. In 1801, the city and its surroundings were purchased by the British East India Company. Afterwards, Gorakhpur became the primary location for recruiting Gurkhas into the British army (ethnic Nepalese soldiers). In 1934, an earthquake caused some serious damage to the region. Lord Buddha gained Mahaparinirvana or salvation here, making Gorakhpur a holy site for Buddhists as well. Buddha was cremated at Ramabhar Stupa. The Vishnu Mandir, Ambedkar Park, Gorakhnath Temple, Lord Buddha Museum, Taramandal, and Ramgarh Tal are also popular. City summers are hot and dry, with temperatures averaging 32∞C. The city's summer lasts from March through June. Seasonal highs and lows range between 25∞C and 40∞C. The winter season lasts from December through February in the city.
