About Tuticorin

Thoothukudi, dubbed Pearl City because of the abundance of pearlfish, has a fascinating history. Thoothukudi was a part of the Pandyan Kingdom between the 7th and 9th centuries A.D., but it fell into the hands of the Cholas between the 9th and 12th centuries. Thoothukudi's emergence as a maritime port drew travellers, adventurers, and eventually colonisers. The Portuguese arrived first in 1932 A.D. The Dutch arrived in 1658 A.D. In 1782, the English captured Thoothukudi from the Dutch, which was transferred to the East India Company. Today, it is a busy port in Tamil Nadu, 40 km east of Tirunelveli on the Gulf of Mannar on the Bay of Bengal. One can reach Thoothukudi by boarding Guwahati to Thoothukudi flights.
