About Hyderabad

One of the biggest and most densely populated cities in Telangana, Hyderabad, stretches along the banks of the Musi river and is surrounded by dramatic prehistoric rock formations. Formerly the capital of Andhra Pradesh from 1956 to 2014 until the state was split-up, Hyderabad became the capital of both Andhra Pradesh and the newly formed Telangana in 2014. Hyderabad is a major trading centre for pearls and is popularly known as the ìCity of Pearlsî. In 1591, Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah laid the foundation for Hyderabad, a short distance from the erstwhile seat of the kingdom in Golconda. However, the city soon came under the control of the Mughals in the late 17th century. By 1724, Asaf Jah Nizam al-Mulk, who was the Mughal viceroy of the Deccan region, declared independence. The Asaf Jahis carried out a massive expansion of the city, far beyond the existing walled city, north of the Musi river. The later years saw Secunderabad, north of the city centre, being set up as a British cantonment area, connected via a bund to Hyderabad. Today, Hyderabad is known for its rich culture, history, architecture, and cuisine, which is an amalgamation of north and south Indian influences, owing to its geographical location and historical background. The people of the city mostly speak Telugu, Urdu, and Hindi. The local cuisine typically consists of a wide range of meat preparations and rice-based dishes. Food enthusiasts can look forward to digging into platters of Hyderabadi biryani, haleem, kebabs, mirchi bhajji, and bagara baingan. Be sure to try the rich, creamy Irani chai, which is best paired with thick sweet biscuits or hot buns. The best time to visit Hyderabad is from October to March when the weather is cool and pleasant. The city celebrates Ganesh Chathurthi, Bathukamma, Eid, Holi, Diwali, and Christmas with great enthusiasm.
