About Tuticorin

Tuticorin, also known as Thoothukudi, is a city in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. The city is located on the Indian Ocean's Gulf of Mannar, approximately 40 km east of Tirunelveli. For almost 2000 years, the ancient town of Korkai to present-day Thoothukudi, has been a hub for maritime commerce and pearl fishing. It grew from a modest fishing village to a thriving Portuguese colony in the 16th century and flourished further during Dutch and British occupations. Tuticorin has a vibrant and diverse culture. Many different monarchs dominated the territory, and their influence, including Portuguese, British, and Dutch, can still be felt in the city's culture and architecture. The language spoken by the locals is English and Tamil which is the official language of Tamil Nadu. Macaroons are a popular sweet in Tuticorin, due to the Portuguese colonial influence. As a coastal town, fish is central to local non-vegetarian cuisine. Meen kulambu, meen varuval, and a dry fish delicacy called karuvaddu kulambu are some of the local dishes of Tuticorin. Vatthal kulambu is a vegetarian curry and a breakfast dish often consumed is venthaya kali. Most of the locals practise agriculture as their occupation. Tourism, fishing, and salt pans are the other areas of employment for the residents of Tuticorin. The district's notable characteristics include its long, curved, and gorgeous sea shoreline, formerly a global attraction for its pearl fishery; magnificent coastal villages with holy temples, churches, and mosques, such as Tiruchendur, Manappadu, and Kayalpattinam. Tuticorin, a seaside town in southern India, doesn't have a winter season. Summers can be oppressively hot and humid, with monsoon rains common, while the rest of the year is pleasant and sunny. In Tuticorin, November to March is ideal for visitors to explore.
