About Chennai

Tamil Nadu's capital city, Chennai, was also known as Madras. It was a name that the city had until 1996. Chennai is on the Bay of Bengal's Coromandel Coast and is a major cultural and financial hub. Chennai is India's sixth-most populated city and its fourth-most populous city agglomeration. Since its establishment in 1688, the Chennai Corporation has been India's oldest metropolitan and the second-oldest in the world, after London. Before the arrival of the British in 1639 , Armenian and Portuguese purchasers had been living in the San Thome area , which is the present-day Chennai. The British East India Company established a fortress and factory (trading submit) at Madraspatnam, a fishing town, in 1639ñ40 and came to be known as Madras. Local weavers and native traders were encouraged to reside near the town since cotton fabric weaving was a local business in the period. Squash, cricket, tennis, and hockey are some of the most popular sports in Chennai and the surrounding area. The Madras Cricket Club (1848), situated behind the Chepauk Palace, holds major national sports events. It is the oldest cricket club in the country. Chennai is home to a wide variety of religious landmarks, including temples, churches, mosques, forts, and palaces. This city is known for its beaches, temples, fabrics, monuments, Carnatic tracks, classical dances, and gastronomy. It is a historically rich city known for its lifestyle and architecture. The British and French left their imprint on Chennai throughout the colonial era. Chennai is like micro-Asia, where you see a diverse range of people, customs, and civilisations, all existing together.
