About Amritsar

Amritsar is an important city of Punjab, located 32 km east of the India-Pakistan border. The city has great religious and cultural significance. The seat of Sikhism is the beating heart of the city, with countless devotees from around the world visiting The Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) every year. Amritsar was founded in 1577 by Guru Ram Das, the fourth Sikh Guru. He started by building the first landmark of the city, a large artificial pool called the Amrit Sarovar. He then invited 52 traders who opened 32 shops in the city on a street called Batisi Hatta (32 shops). The shops exist even today and helped establish Amritsar as a trade city in the late 1500s. In 1822, Sikh King Maharaja Ranjit Singh started building a wall around the city. After his death, Sher Singh, the 4th Sikh King continued the construction of the wall. He built twelve gates in the wall, including the Shahzada, Lahori Darwaza, Rangar Nangalia, Gilwali, and Ramgharhia. After the British took over the city, a 13th gate called Hall Gate, was built into the wall. Amritsar is a vibrant city and its Punjabi cuisine is incredibly popular. Some popular items include Chole Kulche, Aloo Paratha, Paneer Paratha, Gobi Paratha, Sarson ka Saag, Makki ki Roti, Tandoori Roti, Tandoori Chicken, Chaat, Dry Fruit Chai, Kulfi, and Lassi. Amritsarís streets are also lined with mithai shops that sell traditional North Indian sweets.
