About Jodhpur

Jodhpur is the second-largest city in the state of Rajasthan. It is located west of Jaipur, the state capital. It is a city of magnificent palaces, majestic forts and ancient temples. The architecture, brilliant hues and rich legacy of the city make it one of the most popular tourist destinations in India. The city was founded by Rajput ruler Rao Jodha of the Rathore clan, in 1459. Under Rao Jodha, the city flourished as a commercial centre as it was situated at the intersection of major trade routes linking Delhi and Gujarat. In mediaeval times, Jodhpur was known for trade in copper, silk, coffee and dates. Due to its location in the Thar Desert, Jodhpur has bright, sunny weather all year round, giving it the nickname ëSun Cityí. It is also situated in the ëMarwarí region, or ëmaru-warí, meaning ëregion of deathí due to its harsh desert climate. Uniquely, the old city of Jodhpur is called the ëBlue Cityí as all the homes here are painted bright blue. The blue town spreads out at the feet of Mehrangarh Fort and is an astonishing sight when viewed from above. Jodhpurís customs and culture are a magnet for tourists. Some of the cityís local festivals are Nag Panchami, Nav Sati, Gangaur, Holi and Diwali. Since mediaeval times, polo has been the royal sport of Jodhpur. Furniture, handicrafts, glass bangles, cutlery, carpets, and marble products are very popular in Jodhpur.
