About Gwalior

Gwalior is a northern city of Madhya Pradesh situated 122 km to the south of Agra. The municipality boasted a prosperous cultural heritage and was once part of the Scindia dynasty. It is a recognised and sought-after tourist spot for its eye-catching forts and elaborate palaces. Gwalior's naming is based on a historic rock fortress found at the city's core, which has been passed on, over many generations, to various kingdoms. Gwalior was under several domains throughout history, like the Tomars, Mughals, Maratha, and Scindia dynasties. It was also a prominent region of gathering during the Indian Freedom Struggle. Today, Gwalior harbours one of the largest commercial and industrial zones in all of northern India. The fourth-largest city of Madhya Pradesh, Gwalior is also considered a principal educational hub. Also known as the City of Music, Gwalior was visited by acclaimed musicians like Tansen. Today, the city houses one of the oldest and most popular Gharanas of Hindustani classical music. Gwalior, earlier called the Gopgiri, was a centre of bustling trade and culture even in ancient times. Seeing the control of many prosperous empires, the city gradually gained fame as a notable region of religion, monuments, and temples. It became the capital of Kannauj under the Gurjara-Pratihara Dynasty between 700 and 740 AD, and a Sun temple was built here to enhance its influence on the dynasty. Raja Man Singh established countless Jain temples and monuments during his rule. In the 1730s, the Scindias took over the city and lost it to the British colonies. Gwalior is well-connected with its neighbouring towns and the entire country. A fusion of Braj and Bundeli cultures can be found in the city. Festivals like the Tansen festival add to the cultural significance of the region.
