About Jaisalmer

Jaisalmer, a city located in the western part of Rajasthan, was established by the Rajput chief Rawal Jaisal in 1156 AD. The name of the town translates to Hill Fort of Jaisal. The surrounding sandy dunes of the Thar desert and the various yellow sandstone structures of Jaisalmer lend it the moniker 'The Golden City.' Jaisalmer's fortunes have ebbed and grown throughout its history. It initially gained its riches due to its strategic location along the camel-train trade routes from India to central Asia. Jaisalmer lost much of its glory under the British as sea trade routes opened up, and post-independence, the land trade leading to other parts of the continent was cut short due to partition. However, Jaisalmer has seen a revival post-partition as a strategic military base and as a tourist hotspot. The architecture, food, and culture make it a must-visit destination. However, the ideal time to visit is the winter months, from October to March, to avoid harsh summers. The majestic Jaisalmer fort, several ancient Jain temples, ornate Havelis (mansions) and other buildings are a testament to its diverse and brilliant architectural legacy. Jaisalmer's rich culture reflects in its cuisine and craftsmanship. As you explore its rich heritage, make sure to try local delicacies like murgh-e-subz, ker sangri, kadhi pakora, and aloo baingan. You can shop for beautiful handicrafts such as silver jewellery, intricate embroidery, mirrorwork fabrics, hand-woven blankets and rugs, and stonework. Ghoomar, kalbeliya and kathputli are performative arts that you can enjoy with the locals. Rajasthani, Hindi and Urdu are the languages spoken in Jaisalmer. Apart from national holidays, the natives celebrate festivals such as Diwali, Holi, and Eid with much exuberance.
