About Jammu

Jammu, the winter capital of the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir, is situated on a hillock, overlooking the northern plains near the Shivalik Range of Himalayas. It is also referred to as the "City of Temples.î It is believed that Raja Jamboo Lochan, a king who ruled the region in and around the 9th century, founded the city. According to popular belief, a tiger and a goat were both seen sipping water from the same pond one day while the Raja was out hunting. He was inspired by this amazing occurrence, and he made the decision to establish a city here so that the powerful and the weak may coexist in harmony and tolerance. He eventually established the settlement that took his name "Jamboo." The pronunciation of the word significantly changed over time and as a result of regular use, leading to the city's current name "Jammu." Jammu offers myriad sightseeing spots such as palaces, gardens, temples, and forts. Raghunath Temple, Vaishno Devi Temple, Peer Kho Cave, and Bahu Fort are among the major tourist highlights of Jammu.
