About Jorhat

Jorhat is a major city in the state of Assam and is considered the cultural capital. The name Jorhat came from two markets or ëhaatsí, Chowkihaat and Macharhaat. It is a doorway into both Assam and Nagaland. Jorhat was an integral part of the Ahom kingdom in Assam and served as the capital city under the last Ahom king, Gaurinath Singha. Many water bodies were built around Jorhat under Rajmao Phukuri and other Ahom royalty. Jorhat became a flourishing commercial centre under the Ahoms, but subsequent invasions by the Burmese and the British destroyed major parts of the city. In 1885, the Jorhat Provincial Railway was built at Jorhat, and it gave great impetus to the development of the tea industry in Jorhat. The population is predominantly Hindu though a small proportion of Muslim and Christian populations also exist. Assamese, Bengali, Hindi and Bhojpuri are the main languages spoken here. There are also immigrants from Rajasthan, Orissa and other places. Quite a few tribals work in the tea estates.
