The airport has got a single terminal and is located around 27 km from the city centre in the Kumbhirgram area. The city of Jorhat derives its name from two words ëJorí which means joint and ëHatí which means market. The two markets namely Macharhaat and Chowkihaat are situated by the side of the river Bhogdoi ever since the 18th century. It was the capital city of the last ruling Ahom king Gaurinath Singha in the 18th century. Later on, the capital was shifted to Sibsagar in 1794.
