About Amritsar

Amritsar, historically known as Ramdaspur or Ambarsar, is situated around 25 km east of the border with Pakistan in northern Punjab. A significant commercial, transportation, and cultural hub, Amritsar houses the infamous 'Golden Temple', also known as Sri Harmandir Sahib (The Abode of God). It derives its name from Amrit Sarovar, built in 1574 AD by Sri Guru Ramdass Ji in the village of Tung. It has also been eulogised in the Guru Granth Sahab. His belief that the lake's waters had healing powers drove him to invite about 52 traders from different sectors belonging to nearby places to settle here. The 32 shops started by these families still stand in the Batisi Hatta. You must have understood until now that Amritsar is the city where whimsically faith and food intertwine. One will find a touch of desi ghee, rich ingredients, and heavy plating in most of their delicacies. Interestingly, Sikhism emphasises 'service towards all', which is evident in the dining halls of the Golden temple, where Langar is served. Cooked with utmost devotion, the rich and poor together sit and enjoy food to their heart's content. People's candidness, untouched by any external influence, is an advantage. Punjabi is the official state language; however, it is a melting pot. Ladies! You must not miss out on the Phulkari (flower-pattern embroidery) work, which is immensely popular. While Holi and Diwali remain the traditional festivals, Gurupurab, Basant Panchami, and Lohri light up the city with stalls and fairs.

About Kanpur Airport

Kanpur Military Airport (IATA: KNU) is a domestic airport located in the Kanpur Cantonment area. There was a proposal to rename the airport to 'Ganesh Shankar Vidyarthi Airport'. It is about 9 km from the city centre and has a single domestic terminal with two boarding gates for domestic flights to and from Kanpur. All the major airlines like Air India, SpiceJet, and IndiGo operate flights to the metropolitans like Mumbai, New Delhi, and Bengaluru. Until 1970, the airport was designated entirely for the use of the Indian Air Force, which is why it is still referred to as the Chakeri Air Force Station. Post that, commercial flights started to operate from this airport, and by 2004, it started functioning as a regular domestic airport connecting Kanpur to almost all major cities. Development of the airport for parking larger airbuses, along with the construction of a new lounge and car parking, is underway and is most likely to be completed by the end of this year. The airport offers basic facilities like free-of-cost baggage handling service and a wheelchair-friendly environment for people in need. A snack bar is available to grab a snack or something to drink! Besides, there are information desks and medical assistance. By now, if you have given a thorough read, you must be on your way to finding the infamous 'Thaggu Ke Laddu' and the 'Badnam Kulfi' from the movie 'Bunty Aur Babli'!
