About Chennai

Earlier known as Madras, Chennai is one of Indiaís premier cities. It is the capital of the southern state of Tamil Nadu. Located along the Bay of Bengal on Indiaís east coast, Chennai has a rich and diverse history. It was an important urban centre during the rule of the Pallava Dynasty (till the 9th century CE) and continued to be a hub of trade and commerce, briefly under the Portuguese and then during the colonial British. Thus, Chennai has always been an important administrative and commercial region. Chennai's historical roots also make it a diverse religious hub. It has more than 600 Hindu temples. It also has several churches, including one of the most important shrines in India, called the San Thome Basilica. Dedicated to St Thomas, one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus who landed on Keralaís shores in the 1st century CE, the church is said to enclose the tomb of the saint, who is believed to have been martyred in what is present-day Chennai. The present church was built by the British in 1898. The city is also a rich and vibrant cultural centre and a hub of traditional performing arts. It is home to the Madras Music Academy, devoted to the encouragement of Carnatic music. Also headquartered here is Kalakshetra, an academy of music and dance, and the Rasika Ranjini Sabha built to promote theatre. Chennai's culinary capabilities stretch beyond idli-dosa! Its unique variety of food ranges from Mulligatawny Soup, a perfect blend of traditional Indian and British ingredients, to spicy fried anchovies called 'Nethili fries'. Drinking freshly brewed filter coffee and eating the sundal served on Marine Beach during Dusherra are also memorable experiences.
