About Kanpur Airport

Kanpur Airport (IATA: KNU) also known as Chakeri Air Force Station was designed as a military airport for use by the Indian Air Force. From 1970, the airport started operating domestic flights. It is located around 10 km from the city centre. Kanpur Airport has a single terminal for domestic flights, with two boarding gates. The terminal capacity is around 50 passengers each for arrivals and departures. Spread over an area of 390 sq m, the airport has one check-in and one security counter. About Kanpur

Kanpur is a city in southwest central Uttar Pradesh and lies on the Ganga River around 72 km southwest of Lucknow. The name of the city was derived from Kanhiyapur, the place of Lord Krishna. In the 13th century, Kanpur was a small village known as Kanhpur established by Raja Kanh Deo of the Kanhpuria clan. Several rulers of Kannauj ruled over the area, such as Harsha Vardhan, Jai Chand, and Mihir Bhoja. Subsequently, the area came under Muslim rule under the Sur dynasty and Shuja-ud-Daula, the Nawab of Awab. Kanpur was part of the Oudh Kingdom from 1773 to 1801. Today, the city has progressed into a major industrial and commercial centre in Uttar Pradesh. Kanpur is called Leather Capital of India as it is renowned for its leather industry and houses several leather tanneries.
