About Leh

Leh is a town in the union territory of Ladakh. It is located at an altitude of 3,520 m in a valley near the Indus River. Enveloped by mountain ranges, including the Himalayas, Leh offers a surreal experience to its visitors. The Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council is in charge of Lehís governance. Dragpa Bumdey, the King of Ladakh, built the first fortification of the town in the early 15th century. Later, in the 17th century, Leh became the royal capital of the Himalayan kingdom of Ladakh. It was during this time that the Leh Palace, Lachen Palkar Palace, was built. Leh can only be reached via two roads, namely the SrinagarñLeh Highway and the LehñManali Road. However, both roads are only open on a seasonal basis. Because of the townís remoteness and lack of accessibility, it is also known as the ëHermit Kingdomí. Leh experiences increased rainfall and climate changes, so the old town has been added to the list of 100 most endangered sites by the World Monuments Fund. The town experiences a cold desert climate, with extended periods of winter that start from late October and goes on till February. Lehís landscape, culture, and tradition boost the tourism industry and offer ample employment opportunities to the locals. It also promotes economic growth in less accessible areas of the district. Leh attracts tourists from both within and outside the country, making the economy highly dependent on tourism. Leh is home to many monasteries, the most popular among which are Hemis, Alchi, Lamayuru, Shey, and Thiksay.
