About Mangalore

Mangaluru, commonly known as Mangalore, is a city in the southwest of the country's Karnataka state. It is a harbour on the backwaters created by the Gurpur and Netravati rivers on the coast of the Arabian Sea. Along the Malabar Coast, Mangaluru has traditionally served as a roadstead. The city developed trading links with the Persian Gulf area in the fourteenth century, and the Portuguese took control of it in the middle of the sixteenth century. It developed into a key shipbuilding facility under the Mysore sultans in 1763, and after several sieges, it went to the British in 1799. The modern city is densely populated with coconut farms. Ships need to anchor 3 miles offshore due to sandbars in this important transshipment area. The city is the terminal of the west-coast section of the Southern Region Railway and has both private and public power plants, an airport, a national highway, and other infrastructure. Both a Lutheran Mission and a Roman Catholic pastor have their headquarters in Mangaluru.
