About Varanasi

Also known as Banaras or Kashi, Varanasi is a sacred place for Hindus. The city is believed to be the oldest living city in the world situated on the banks of the holy River Ganga in the south of Uttar Pradesh. Varanasi is also one of Indiaís most culturally-rich cities, with long hauls of ghats for religious bathing. It is believed that if anyone dies in Varanasi they attain deliverance and freedom from the cycle of birth and death. Intimate rituals of life and death take place in public, and the sights, sounds and smells of the maze-like city can seem grave and violent to tourists not accustomed to the culture. Yet, the ghats or watching daylight from a boat on the Ganges is a highlight for all tourists. Besides being a major pilgrimage spot for Hindus for ages, Varanasi is also a pilgrimage place for Jains, the birthplace of Parsvanath, the twenty-third Tirthankar. The place where Buddha preached his first sermon after attaining enlightenment is just 10 Km away from the city. Knowledge, culture, devotion to Gods, and Indian trades and crafts originating from Varanasi have flourished for centuries.
