About Belgaum Airport

Belgaum Airport (IATA: IXG), also known as Belagavi Airport, is a domestic airport that serves Belagavi, a city in Karnataka, India. There is an Indian Air Force base near the airport, where recruits undergo basic training. Belagavi Airport was built by the Royal Air Force (RAF) in 1942 and is the oldest airport in Karnataka. The Royal Air Force used the airport as a training ground during World War II to support the Southeast Asia Command. The Director of Civil Aviation (DGCA) managed the airport in 1956, followed by the Civil Aviation Bureau in 1962. The new terminal building that opened in 2017 covers an area of 3,600 m2 and can accommodate more than 300 passengers. There are two baggage conveyor belts and six check-in counters.

Belgaum, also known as Belagavi or Belgavi, is a town in the state of Karnataka, India. It is the administrative headquarters of the district of Belgaum and is also called the second capital of Karnataka. Belagavi was founded in the late 12th century by the Ratta dynasty, which had resettled from nearby Saundatti. A Ratta official named Bichiraja built the Jain temple Kamalbasadhi, dedicated to Neminata, in 1204. The pillars found at the temple have Kannada inscriptions in the Nagari script. The city's original name was Venugrama, which means "bamboo village" in Sanskrit. Alternatively, in early Indian texts, it is called Venupura, which means "bamboo city".
