About Mangalore

It is an important port city in Karnataka, around 350 km from Bangalore. It is the administrative HQ of Dakshina Kannada. The coastal city is tucked between the Arabian Sea and the Western Ghats. It is said that the city was named after the Hindu goddess, Mangaladevi. The climate here is tropical due to the South West Monsoon, and it is located at an elevation of 22 m. The city is a prominent exporter of cashews and coffee. The region is known for its beautiful lakes, pristine beaches, gorgeous parks, and more. Mangalore has been ruled by many dynasties, including the Vijayanagara dynasty. It was first established as a capital city by the Alpa dynasty in the 14th century. The Portuguese captured Mangalore in 1520, only to lose it to the Arabs, who conquered it in 1695. In 1763, Hyder Ali of Mysore drove the Arabs out and claimed the region for himself and his son, Tipu Sultan. The British tried to claim Mangalore many times but were defeated. Yet, Tipuís army fell at Srinagapatanam, weakening his kingdom and leading to British supremacy in the coastal town. Mangalore became a part of Karnataka in 1956. Almost all major Indian festivals, such as Diwali, Easter, Christmas, Ganesh Chaturthi, Eid, and Dasara, are celebrated in Mangalore. The Goud Saraswat Brahmin community celebrates the peculiar Mangaluru Rathotsava or Kodial Theru. The Catholic community in the region religiously observes Mother Maryís Feast or Monte Fest as a gesture of gratitude for a good harvest season. Other festivals include Aati, Kudlostava, Karavali Utsav, and Jain Food Festival.
