About Kozhikode

Kozhikode, commonly known as Calicut, is a city in the southwest Indian state of Kerala. Located at Malabar Coast, it is 666 km via train from the west-southwest of Chennai in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu. Kozhikode was previously a renowned centre for cotton weaving and is acknowledged as the birthplace of the fabric known as calico. When Arab traders first migrated to the area in the seventh century, it became a major trading hub. In 1498, Vasco da Gama, a Portuguese navigator who opened up a sea route to India, arrived in Kozhikode. A fortified trading centre was established by the Portuguese there in 1511; however, it was deserted in 1525. Although an English expedition visited Kozhikode in 1615, the British East India Company didn't establish a trade presence there until 1664. The French came next in 1686, and the Danes in 1752. The town was completely demolished in 1765 by Hyder Ali, the 18th-century Indian monarch and military commander of Mysore. Kozhikode was conquered by the British in 1790 and, after the inhabitants left, they reconstructed the city. It was later given to them by a treaty in 1792. The port of Kozhikode is primarily closed during the summer monsoon; throughout the rest of the year, ships must remain 5 km offshore. In addition to coconuts, the city also exports commodities like pepper, coffee, ginger, and tea. Its industries include hosiery manufacturing, tile manufacturing and sawmills.
