This airport serves two metropolitan areas ó Kozhikode and Malappuram ó and is a major hub for passenger and cargo traffic in the Malabar region. Located 28 km from the Kozhikode city centre and 25 km from Malappuram, the airport was granted international status in 2006. It has been operational since 1988. The airport has two terminals ó one dedicated to regional and other domestic flights and the other to international flights. Kozhikode Airport has many passenger amenities. These include 23 check-in counters, 42 immigration counters, 5 Customs counters, and 3 security checks posts. Passengers departing on domestic flights can enter the terminal through Gate 1, while those departing on international flights can enter through Gate 2. Kozhikode is a prominent city in northern Kerala, located on the Malabar Coast of India. Earlier called Calicut, it has always been an important port on the west coast of India and traded actively with the Arab world and other foreign cultures.
