About Kozhikode

Kozhikode is the city where Vasco de Gama first landed on the Indian shores. From mediaeval times, Kozhikode has seen the arrival of Arab, Chinese and East African traders. Also known as Calicut, it is located on the southwestern coast of India. Kozhikode is bounded by the Arabian Sea on the west and the Western Ghats on the east. In the mediaeval times, Cheras and Zamorin ruled the capital city of Kozhikode. The other parts of Kerala were landlocked, and these rulers wanted an outlet to trade with other distant kingdoms. Kozhikode flourished as a seaport and became the centre of the spice trade in India. Vasco de Gamaís entry into Kozhikode led to the war between Arab traders and the Portuguese. It further led to battles between the Zamorin and the Portuguese. Their relationship swayed between friendship and enmity. Finally, the arrival of the Dutch ousted the Portuguese, and they formed the Dutch East India Company, which was followed by the reign of Hyder Ali from the Vijayanagar empire and finally by the British. The British captured Raja Ravi Varma and later established their dominance over Malabar. After Indiaís independence, in 1957, Kozhikode was reconstituted as a part of the newly formed Kerala. Kozhikode is the third-largest city in Kerala. It is located at a distance of 380 km from Keralaís state capital Thiruvananthapuram. Kozhikode has a mix of Hindu, Muslim, Christian, Jain and Buddhist populations. Kozhikode has a very humid and hot climate from March to May. It also receives abundant rainfall during the monsoon. The cuisine of Kozhikode is dominated by Malabar cuisine, including chicken and mutton Biryani, Mango Fish with Appam and Karimeen Pollichattu, Malabar Parottas, Fish Stew and Wheat Pathiri.
