About Jorhat

Jorhat is one of the major cities in the Indian state of Assam and is located on the banks of the river Bhogdoi, a tributary of the mighty Brahmaputra. The place has rich historical importance as it was made the last capital of the Ahom Kingdom by the then king Gaurinath Singha, during which it was a flourishing commercial centre. The name Jorhat refers to twin haats or markets of Macharkhat and Chowkikhat. Under the rule of the Ahoms, Jorhat faced a series of Burmese invasions, which eventually came to a halt after the British siege in 1824. During the colonial era, it was home to many great revolutionaries like Piyali Barua, Maniram Dewan and Gomdadhar Kanwar, who sacrificed their lives for India's Independence. The city is also known for indigenous arts and crafts, which include ornaments, pottery, textiles, smoking pipes, weapons and bamboo products, all made from natural materials. The city is also famous for its traditional jewellery. Jorhat is also home to the largest tea research centre in the world, The Tocklai Tea Research Institute. Jorhat offers its visitors unique native delicacies like fish stew, koat pitha (banana pitha) and bamboo shoot.
