About Rajkot Airport

Rajkot International Airport (IATA: RAJ) is the fourth busiest airport in Gujarat after Ahmedabad, Surat, and Vadodara. It is also known as the Civil Aerodrome Rajkot and is around 2 km from the city centre. Flights to major cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Goa and Delhi are available regularly. There is currently only one terminal at Rajkot Airport. This terminal can accommodate 250 passengers and has one boarding gate on the ground floor. There are six check-in desks and two security checks at the terminal. The Rajkot Airport is a hub for major domestic airline operators such as Air India, IndiGo, and SpiceJet. The airport offers general passenger services such as free trolleys, a lost and found baggage counter, escorting assistance for the elderly and differently-abled travellers, a daycare centre, and medical first aid facilities. The airport has an extensive network of buses and taxis that connect it to the city centre, and even the Rajkot Railway Station is just 2 km away. Due to the city's expansion and the development of residential and commercial buildings around it, the airport has significant capacity constraints, making it impossible to extend the runway. Therefore, plans are in place to relocate the airport approximately 10 km away from the city.

About Rajkot

Rajkot is the fourth largest city in the Indian state of Gujarat, following Ahmedabad, Vadodara, and Surat. It is located in the Saurashtra region and is one of the fastest developing cities in India. It is situated nearly 240 km away from Gandhinagar, the capital city of Gujarat, and serves as the administrative centre of the Rajkot district. The city is located on the shores of the rivers Nyari and Aaji. Rajkot has a very rich history. In 1610, Thakorji Vibhaji established the city of Rajkot and ruled over a group of 64 villages. In 1720, Masum Khan of the Sorath regiment conquered the city, and Rajkot was renamed Masumabad. A decade later, the son of the fallen king Meramanji avenged his father's defeat by overthrowing Masum Khan and renaming the city Rajkot. Rajkot is also associated with the Father of the Nation, Mahatma Gandhi, who pursued his early education in the town. After independence, the city functioned as the capital of Saurashtra state until it was dissolved, and Rajkot was merged into Gujarat in 1960. Rajkot is famous for its sweets, traditional snacks, Navratri festivities, silverwork handicrafts, and network of narrow streets.
