About Leh Airport

The Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IATA: IXL) is one of Indiaís highest commercial airports, located about 3,000 metres above sea level. The airport is named after a local politician and monk, the 19th Kushok Bakula Rinpoche. It is a domestic airport with only one terminal. The domestic terminal spans an area of around 2500 sq m. This airport offers regular flights to several regions of the nation. The facilities provided at the airport include a baby care room, a childcare room, ATMs, a helpdesk, a smoking zone etc. All aeroplanes take off and land in the morning due to the presence of afternoon mountain breezes. The approach is challenging since it is one-way and has steep terrain towards the airportís eastern end. Because of Indian Army patrols, airport security is strong. The approach to Leh Airport is recognised as one of the most beautiful in the world due to its position in the Himalayas. Air India, GoFirst, IndiGo, Vistara, and SpiceJet operate flights from Leh Airport. It takes approximately 10 minutes to drive the approximately 5 km between Leh Airport and the bus terminal. Prepaid taxis and state transport buses are available from the airport.

About Leh

Leh is the capital of the Union Territory of Ladakh, and it is the main tourist gateway to the region. It is also one of the worldís highest permanently inhabited settlements. Lehís arid, barren landscape is peppered with historic Buddhist monasteries and surrounded by two of the worldís highest mountain ranges, making the place a visual delight. Leh was primarily an important trade centre along the Indus Valley, which connected Tibet to the east and Kashmir to the west. It became Ladakhís capital in the early 17th century, during the regionís golden period of trade. King Senge Namgyal finished the construction of a royal palace in Leh and moved the capital to Leh. Unfortunately, after the Dogra invasion in the mid-nineteenth century, the royal family was compelled to evacuate the palace and resettle in Stok. Leh has now become a major tourist attraction in India, with tourists flocking to see the surreal vistas the terrain in the region offers. The Buddhist monasteries in Leh serve as major tourist attractions.
